Car wiper blade (mis)pricing

I went to an independent car parts dealer today, looking to replace three wipers blades on my mum's Nissan Micra. The shop was selling wiper blade refills for £4 each. The refill is the strip of rubber that runs across the bottom of the metal frame of the wiper - it's the bit that does the actual wiping. They were also selling entire wiper replacements - the metal frame and rubber blade together - for £5 each. Just £1 extra for the entire thing.

Either I'm missing something, or somebody has got their economics way wrong.

Actually I think that it makes some sense. The unit costs of parts is probably 10p! However, the seller know that most people just want to replace the rubber that wears out much more frequently compared to the metal bit. Therefore the price of the rubber bit is higher and metal bit which no one really wants is just a bit higher!

I hear you amigo, but at that price it's got to make sense to buy the full blade. Refills don't last as long as the ones that come on the blade, so £1 may be saved but that could be a false economy in the long-run. If the refill lasted as long as the entire unit, then your logic is bang on. I hear Asda and Lidl sell refills for £1.50, which may be worth a try.

the ruber bits alone are impossible to fit (as I have limited car fixing related skills and can't find any instuctional videos on You Tube)
